New study explains the influence of walnuts on sperm health

In 20121, researchers in Los Angeles discovered that a bowl of walnuts per day may promote sperm health and help men with fertility problems. The movement and shape of sperm cells in particular improved for the study participants who ate 75 grams of California walnuts every day for 12 weeks.

In a new study2, scientists from the University of Delaware (USA) examined the underlying mechanisms. They found out that the sperm cell membranes of mice with a walnut-rich diet were better protected against damage by oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation) than those of the control group. Certain unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are evidently responsible for this, being especially abundant in walnuts.

These results are particularly promising given the fact that sterility in men is currently responsible for 25% of all fertility problems – with many men distinctly wishing to have children at the same time.
