The California walnut industry is introducing a new approach to providing buyers with a clearer picture of available supply. The 2026 California Marketable Walnut Position Report shifts the focus from estimates of walnuts still “on the tree” to an estimate of marketable supply.

This distinction is important: the USDA 2026 Walnut Objective Measurement was made before walnuts are harvested, hulled, graded, sorted and inspected. The new Position Report takes these subsequent steps into account and provides a more detailed view of the volume, quality levels and product choices available to the market.

For buyers and industry partners, the objective is greater transparency and a more reliable basis for purchasing and planning decisions. While California’s 2026 crop is expected to be smaller than last season, the current position report confirms that supplies are sufficient to meet demand for high-quality California walnuts across a broad range of forms.
